29th March, 2019: Centre for Maritime Law NLUO is Organizing a panel Discussion on “Emerging Regimes on

Centre for Maritime Law

The National Law University Odisha, Cuttack (NLUO) established the Centre for Maritime Law in 2015 with an aim to build a center of excellence and research in the field of maritime law in India. The Centre identifies first and foremost, that the statutes which govern maritime law were adapted from foreign states and these statutes don’t address the concerns pertaining to the field appropriately, as the Indian trade practices are relatively different from those foreign states. Also, under the Indian maritime law regime there has been lack of timely amendments and proper implementation and hence most of the laws are outdated and are not equipped to deal with modern complications.

Keeping in mind the complications which perforate the Indian maritime law regime, the Centre has been analyzing the foreign case laws, statutes and their relevancy to the Indian jurisdiction. The Centre is currently working on Indian statutes, case laws, international treaties and conventions pertaining to maritime law and seeks to crystallize the current maritime jurisprudence in India.

Maritime law, as a subject, deals with disputes and offences occurring in the high seas and also covers the laws governing them. There has been a substantial rise in disputes revolving around Maritime law and related areas, particularly due to increase in global trade and International relations. However, maritime law is still remains to be an off-beat subject in India thereby being very less explored. To give impetus to research and discussion in the field of Maritime law the Centre is organizing a panel discussion. Our vision for organizing Panel Discussion on Maritime Law is primarily to inculcate the interest among the legal fraternity in the field of maritime law.

With a large coastline and a substantial part of trade being carried out through sea routes, laws governing maritime claims and disputes become very important in India. Also, India has 212 ports out of which twelve are the major ones, thereby making it even more important to develop and research extensively on the provisions of maritime law.

With the vision to explore and an aim to develop a better understanding of the subject the Centre for Maritime Law is pleased to organize a Panel Discussion on Maritime Law in collaboration with NLUO – Bose &Mitra& Co. International Maritime Arbitration Moot Court Competition, 2019 a flagship moot of NLUO.
