The Moot Society is the official body of NLUO which oversees mooting activities in the university. The society’s flagship event – International Maritime Arbitration Moot is organised in the month of March annually. We, at NLUO, have chosen Maritime Law as the subject matter to complement the maritime operations in Odisha and consequently promote intellectual discourse in the field of Maritime Law. The NLUO-IMAM has created a niche for itself as it is the first moot competition in India and third moot competition in the world to have maritime law as its principal subject area. We endeavour to provide our participants with challenging disputes every successive edition only to help them scale new heights. In the previous editions of the moot, we have successfully hosted the event with the support of Bose & Mitra Co. as our title sponsors and our knowledge partners EBC and SCC Online. NLUO-IMAM has earned a name of its own, currently being the biggest maritime arbitration moot in India.
The Moot Society (TMS) of NLUO is managed by the University’s students under the guidance of a faculty advisor. It enjoys the mandate to coordinate all aspects of the University’s involvement with mooting, which includes organising the annual Intra-University Moot Court Competition (IUMCC) for selecting students to represent NLUO in National and International moot court competitions; co-ordinating lectures, workshops etc. by experts; and conducting on a regular basis informal discussions, workshops, practice moots, and special classes. NLUO boasts a policy of extending financial assistance to students for participating in national and international level moot court competitions. NLUO is remarkable for achieving in its very first year of existence consistently high levels of competitiveness in moot court competitions. This eventually paid off in the form of several outright wins and podium finishes in top- tier competitions.
IMAM 2020 seeks to improve upon the experience by ensuring that the teams are met with a case study on an arbitration dispute arising out of a charter party in the BIMCO “BOXTIME” form. It will provide participants with an opportunity to test their legal acumen before the most acclaimed and engaging panel of judges in the field of maritime law. Owing to the developing interest in the field of maritime law, our competition, as has always been, will be dealing with varied aspects of maritime law and our continued association would be mutually beneficial to both the university and your organisation.
We are immensely proud to announce our association with Bose & Mitra & Co. as our “Title Sponsor” for the 7th edition of NLUO-IMAM. Additionally, the Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law (IISTL), Swansea University has collaborated with NLUO as “Associate Partner” to host the 7th edition of NLUO-IMAM. We are also proud to announce that IISTL will be presenting the “Best Memorial” award in the competition.
