“The Constitutional Law Society of NLUO organized the 2nd certificate course on ‘Supreme Court Practice and Procedure: Writs, PIL, Appeals and Special Leave Petition’.”

The Constitutional Law Society (CLS) of National Law University Odishaunder the aegis of the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ved Kumari and Registrar Prof. Yogesh Pratap Singh, successfully organized the 2nd certificate course on ‘Supreme Court Practice and Procedure: Writs, PIL, Appeals and Special Leave Petition’. The course attracted 160+ registrations which consisted of law students, academicians and evenpractitioners. This course was covered across 3 weeks (2nd – 17th April 2021) comprising of 8 classes. After rigorous learning of 12 hours, the course wassuccessful in bridging the gap between theory and practicality and providing a platform to the students where they gained the skill of transiting the theoretical constitutional knowledgeinto practice.

The introductory session began with a welcome note by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ved Kumari who not only highlighted the importance of organisingonline courses during these tough times but also appreciated the efforts of our course instructor Ms. ShriyaMaini and the society for organising such well- structured course.

Over the course of the first day, subjects like Supreme Court Rules of Practice and Procedure, the significance and utilisation of Vakalatnama, benches of Supreme Court were discussed. The huge takeaway from the first session was the tone at which the course was set, with over 150 students joining who were asking intriguing questions challenging our course instructor Ms. Maini but increasing the quality of the discussion. This lecture was even attended by Vice-Chancellor Ma’am and Registrar Sir of National Law University Odisha.

Over the next few lectures, subjects like jurisdiction, writs and the available remedy of Public Interest Litigation under Article 32 were discussed. One subject which was covered in massive detail was the inter-state water disputes and the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction over them. The intricacies put forward by Ms. Maini contributed hugely in addition to what is conventionally taught in the Universities. In terms of exposure, the candidates gained immensely as they got to see filed writs and PILs in the Supreme Court. Ms. Maini was gracious enough to even show some drafts which she has prepared during her practice.

It must be appreciated that Ms. Maini balanced the theory and developments of the kinds of petitions filed in the Supreme Court with the practical applications of those concepts beautifully. The students of this course were extremely curious regarding these facets and raised intelligent questions.

The certificate course was concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. RishikaKhare (Faculty Advisor of CLS and Assistant Professor of Law) who was overwhelmed with the response shown by the participants throughout the course. She thanked Ms. Shriya Maini for taking her time out and collaborating with the CLS for the second time and hoped for more such collaborations in the future. CLS aims to increase awareness and education on intricate aspects of law so that there is more room for deliberation and discourse amongst the masses. Hence, CLS aims to continue with organization of activities like these in the future.
