On 9 February, 2010, an extension lecture was delivered by the Former Chief Justice of India and Former Chairman, National Human Rights Commission Hon'ble J.S Verma titled Fundamental Rights and Duties: a Conspectus at the National Law University, Orissa. The occasion was also graced by the presence of Hon'ble Shri Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare, the Governor of Orissa who presided over the lecture.
Justice J.S Verma in his extension lecture delivered at the National Law University, Orissa emphasised on the symbiotic relationship between fundamental rights and fundamental duties. He stressed in his lecture that the proper coordination of rights and duties is the effective way to good governance.
Like Justice Verma, Shri Bhandare too stressed on a life of dignity being the essence of life. Hon'ble Shri Bhandare also called upon the students to develop the 3Is: Independence, Integrity, Industriousness and 5Cs: Character, Calibre, Compassion, Courtesy and Common Sense in order to become a lawyer in the true sense of the term. He expressed the desire of seeing NLUO as emerging leading centre of legal education in the country.
