Profile

Souvik obtained an LLM degree with merit from Queen Mary, University of London, for which Calcutta University awarded him with an Overseas Endowment Travel Fellowship/Scholarship. At Queen Mary, he focussed on issues related to trademarks and “product puffing”, in which he also wrote his dissertation. After returning to India he practised first at the Calcutta High Court, and then with a law firm in Mumbai. Here he specialised in corporate and commercial laws, specially mergers and acquisitions, takeovers, and foreign-exchange related issues. He has also worked on areas relating to environmental law, particularly its impact on the health sector.

This background notwithstanding, Souvik’s primary interests have always centred around criminal law. So when he decided to give up his career as a practising lawyer and join academics instead, he also decided to specialise in criminal as an area of teaching and research.

At NLUO, Souvik has been placed in charge of both the Criminal Law courses. Also, in his capacity as faculty advisor to the students’ sports and technology committees, he plays a considerable role in managing students’ extra-curricular activities. This involvement is also reflective of his own involvement in these areas. He played both cricket and football for his college in intra-University tournaments, and has also freelanced as a commentator, anchor, and sportscaster for Doordarshan TV, All India Radio and other broadcasting houses.

Research Interests

Souvik’s main research interests pertain to criminal law. Within this area, he has specialised in areas such as offences against the state, group liability offences, and terrorism law. Cyberlaw, particularly crimes committed over the internet, is another area he has worked on. Drawing on his deep involvement with sports and media, he also plans to work their legal aspects in the future.
